xfire or msn

You really can't compare the two with each other, they're totally different. Xfire is used primarily by gamers, whereas MSN is used by people for talking to their friends and family.

Well, yeah, but no.
Yahoo messenger is used by what, seven people?

Skype and MSN is a more realistic comparison.

Yahoo and MSN are pretty much the same thing as their servers etc are intregrated together and have been for many years.

xFire is a far better gaming communication tool, however the last time I used it, around 2 years ago it would always crash.  The problem is that when it crashed, it would crash your game too.  Therefore making it pointless.

So it comes down to ingame communication which teamspeak and even the old Roger Wilco system combined with MSN for out of game communication.  Don't get me wrong, MSN is a pile of poo, but its by far the most common and therefore most people have it. Theres a few good apps out there that will patch MSN to remove all the ads and other crap which makes it a half decent instant messenger.

Voted for IRC tho, has been for the last 12 years and always will be the ultimate, secure, efficient and best way to communiate online.
