delete  the clientregistry.blob file in your steam directory then, and then restart steam (it will download the gui again, may take a while ~10mins)

Didn't work. Still just says 'updating steam' and doesn't do anything.

Mine crashes on launch now with some runtime error, reinstall didn't fix and I'm afraid that because it's linked to my Steam account it might be annoying to undo, will have to look around now to see if I can get rid of it.

Windows 7 x86.

Oh well, Steam for Mac this month! :>
