Its called a "Plectrum" or most commonly called a "pick" There is soft ones,medium ones,hard ones, Different shapes and sizes and you use different one for different styles of playing, I'd suggest try a medium one with a bit of stiffness but can bend a little, Since you want to play Nickelback you could possibly Google what Chad does when he plays perhaps.
