Re: Extreme Metal - Maddolis - 07-12-2011

Are you asking about heavy metal/power metal screams (a la Rob Halford), black metal shrieks or death metal growls?

Respective examples:
Judas Priest - Painkiller

Windir - 1184 - Todeswalzer

Septic Flesh [Annubis]

You've also got artists that mix some or all of the above (ie you'll hear clean vocals in the SepticFlesh), ie Equilibrium, Winterhorde and many other acts will have a single vocalist that can do both shrieks and growls effectively.

Start listening at 6:25 where he starts with the shrieks at this point and then growls at around 6:42 which effectively alters the mood of the piece.

Re: Extreme Metal - Maka - 07-12-2011

I can't sing thus I can't growl for that matter either. Maddolis, any more great concept albums out there worth checking out?

Re: Extreme Metal - Maddolis - 07-12-2011

Plenty, what style are you after?
Many of the albums that got me into metal were concept albums- are you looking particularly for storyline concept albums or just any concept albums?
Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite
Ayreon - 01011001, The Universal Migrator Parts 1&2 (1 is Pink Floydy, not metal though, 2 is more prog/power but not quite as good as 1), The Human Equation, Into the Electric Castle etc (all Ayreon albums are concept albums).
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Psycroptic - The Scepter of the Ancients (if you're into tech death)
I'm sure you've already heard Blind Guardian's Nightfall in Middle Earth... too many to name but the Symphony X, Ayreon (01011001) and Queensryche were a few I fell in love with in 2008 particularly.

Re: Extreme Metal - STyL4 - 07-12-2011

woah Maddolis, ur knowledge about metal history, albums and such is adorable .. that's what a real "musician" is, not just listening to same music over and over again, pop is something similiar to it ..

i remember i once had a fight with u Maddolis, i take it all back now tough but still .. why do u find A7X a bit gay ? i admit that singer's over reacting about squeezy voices etc. but i think they can make a good show .. (a bit offtopic sync it's not really that extreme metal)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujQXfLfG-io&feature=player_embedded#at=405
so what he's doing here is growl + low pitched "screams" ? do u find it too abstract if i say that growls  are easier to do than screams, those high pitched things .. ?

Re: Extreme Metal - Maddolis - 07-12-2011

I guess it's a personal thing, I'd probably find it easier to do growls but that's because I don't do it professionally and half-ass it, and it's harder to half-ass a shriek. At any rate it's a skill to do either one effectively.

I don't like A7X because they have a very basic, commercial sound, the vocals are rather effeminate (and I can't stand the whiney-type male vocals), their "tough/pretty boy" image is repulsive and arguably most of all they're marketed as "heavy metal" and many of their fans consider themselves to be metalheads while they dress all pretty and talk shit on real metal.
People listen to what they listen to, and I respect that, so I'm not gonna talk shit on a7x fans unless they talk shit on music I consider to be vastly superior in the first place.

Both will do just fine, and I'll make sure to check out the names you listed within the coming days.

Depending on the styles for future references, I guess it'll fall within the following categories: Prog, power, death, black/viking. I like my fair share of melodic and progressive touches on music (though I'll say melodic death isn't 'spot on' my cup of tea, unless people mean the kind that's labelled as prog or tech).

Re: Extreme Metal - Maddolis - 07-12-2011

What did you think of the Disillusion song(s) I probably posted a few weeks ago?

Re: Extreme Metal - Maka - 07-12-2011

If you're referring to the one you posted back in November, I liked it.

Re: Extreme Metal - Maddolis - 07-12-2011

Heard any Orphaned Land?
Orphaned Land - Birth of the three (the unification)

Also listen to Equilibrium's album Sagas. One of the three most epic albums I've ever heard.
Equilibrium - Die Weide und der Fluß

Have you heard any Moonsorrow?

Re: Extreme Metal - Maka - 07-12-2011

Orphaned Land is a band I've heard of before. Judging from the piece you've posted, it's something I like. I'm quite new to the theme being used too to be fair.
I've got Moonsorrow's Voimasta Ja Kunniasta album actually. Equilibrium is something I've yet to listen but I have their Rekreatur album.
