1.8 and the map.

1.8 will include a lot of new map features, stuff like new caverns, ridges, oceans, and even rivers.

Because of this, I think it would be interesting to start using a new map after 1.8's release.

"BUT RIEN, WHAT ABOUT ALL THE STUFF PEOPLE BUILT?"

Well, this is a bit of a problem, yes. One solution would be copying buildings from our current worldand pasting them into a new one, but this would be incredibly time consuming, not to mention we would first have to explore a large part of the map, just so we have enough space to place all the things people built.

I'd like to hear opinions on what we should do after 1.8's release, should we keep the current map? Should we copy-paste the stuff from our old world into a new one? Should we let players choose a small selection of stuff to keep, and then place that in the new world?

Discuss.

I swear we share the same mind. I have been thinking about a new map the past two days. Our map is nearing 900mb, and I'm starting to become sick of the haxxed materials. I'd love to start 100% new, but we will piss off (and probably loose) a lot of players by doing this. Copying things for players could be an option indeed. When 1.8 comes out, what I would like to do is wait until Bukkit has a stable release and take the server down for maybe an hour. Then, move the current world to a secondary world, and use a completely new map as the default. Maybe have no build rights in the old map, and allow players to request only their most important stuff to the new world. Maybe we could ask the rest of the community? But yeah, I'd like a new map. Maybe you will start playing again, Rien :)

I'm ingame right now! And I also was ingame earlier today!

Anywho, if we were to put out current world in a secondary world, how would that affect RAM-usage? Would it be a temporary thing or would the world be there permanently?

As for asking the rest of the community, I planned on doing that, but I wanted to hear some of the crew's opinions first.

I +1 the 100% map re-generation. To be honest I don't mind gathering materials again and building another city, and if people want their buildings back, then go copy&pasteĀ  :+

It would be temporary, and we should have enough RAM for this purpose.

Yeah I'm not too worried about RAM-usage if it's temporary, but I can imagine it getting RAM intensive if it's permanent.

Good idea though, will also give people time to move items from chests.

Indeed, but I rather they don't each take their 400 diamond blocks with them.

+1, that's what I already wanted months ago and if we do this we need new guidelines on how to build, what to build, where to build etc.

I got a pretty nice idea, it is possible to load different worlds with bukkit, this would work like nether + first world, before I played on LVM I played on a german MC server and they had a mining world and the real world. It is possible to re-generate this mining world after some time (possibly with a new seed to prevent players from knowing old ore spots). This would also be a solution for any future version of Minecraft.

I like this.

They also have some pretty cool multi-server plugins, so we *could* technically even have the mining world reside on another server if the main server couldn't handle it.
