If you like shopping in combination with sight seeing and love to walk a long distance. Amsterdam is the way to go.(and of course if you want sex: "de wallen")
Rotterdam is smaller and the buildings are not that historical as in amsterdam.
Both places are very nice to visit. And both have some good tourist spots.
Seriously, there are people that like Rotterdam? It's such an ugly city, with nothing interesting in it. Amsterdam is indeed a nice city with some beautiful buildings, nice bars and some nice shopping areas.

indeed, that's why i go to rotterdam and just straight shop. Buy the things you need and then kthnxbye to home...
