Bad company 2 connection problems

When I start the game, I can log into my account, then on to Multiplayer. I can browse for a server, join it and play it for about 2 minutes. Then it takes me back to the main menu with the lovely message: Disconnected from EA Online (sometimes it doesn't even have the decency to give me any message).
This keeps happening over and over.

This first happened about a month ago, but since then I re-installed windows, and only installed the game on my new installation a week ago, but hadn't played until after I updated today.
Basically, in English, it happened a month ago, and it's happening today after a fresh Windows install.

My connection is awful, but I always get a reasonable 90ish ping on European servers, and I've never had problems before a month ago when playing online.

I've tried manually downloading and updating Punkbuster.

The game is an exception in my firewall, which is disabled anyway. It's also an exception in Avast!.

Does anyone have any ideas?

BC2 might need a proper connection to run properly
Bc2 is kinda laggy in general, its not like CS where they die straight away if u shoot em, on BC2 it might take a second or so before the person actually dies because of shitty connections on that game

I got the game in July, and had been playing with no problem up until about a month ago.

You should use WLAN Optimizer, if you are playing with a wireless lan on Windows Vista or 7.

I'm on Windows XP and cable.
I'm gonna try resetting my router to factory default.
