Benitez himself is good and usually knows what he's doing, and has done a great job under Liverpool and in his first 200 games, he's joint 1st with Dalglish I think as the manager to win most of their first 200 games.
It's just his formation and favouritism which makes him look bad. I mean he's played Torres on the wing once, and until recently, about the time Torres came back (before going again
) he always plays defensively. If you're too defensive you're never gonna score, as has been seen this season with our 0-0 draws or many defeats.
And as I said he plays some players out of place, or two wrong players at the same time. Best example is Mascherano and Lucas. Both are defensive midfielders, yet he plays them both on the pitch. As seen recently, Lucas is pretty good offensively, and as it's been seen since he came to Liverpool, he's shite defensively. Yet Rafa insists on playing them both instead of letting them compete for the spot (improving them both at the same time).
Also his favouritism (as said also), I like Lucas, I think he's too critisized and makes too many mistakes to back up the critics but when he's given an actual chance he can be good. But I know for a fact Rafa loves him and will do anything to play him. And it's as if he loves shit players.
Look at Kyriakos (I've said this plenty of times too). At the start of the season, Kyriakos was pretty crap, but was played all the time. He then started to improve (quite a lot) and now look, sat on the bench for the rest of the season except for when replacing a suspended + injured Insua for the Europa 2nd leg and against West Ham. The very same goes for Philip Degen. He's starting to become a decent player (he dives too much though) and he's never getting a game.
His other big problem is his attitude towards promising youths. Have you ever seen Dani Pacheco? He's a GREAT player, has a great shot, pace, and has a good eye on the ball when creating / recieving chances. Yet he's never given a chance, and Rafa just raises false hope to him by putting him on the bench and occasionally give him the rest of the injury time to play.
And to end this giant rant, he also sucks when it comes to Aquilani and Babel. We bought Aquaman for 22million, he arrived injured, as he recovered he caught a bug, then when fully fit he remained on the pitch until this day. He has only ever had 1 full 90 minutes, and that was when he scored that great goal. And the favouritism also goes against Babel. People have always said Babel is crap and stuff, but they only say this because he's never given the chance to prove himself. Rafa never plays him and when he does it's only towards the end of the game when he hasn't gotten enough time to warm up on the pitch and become a big part of the game. And to make it worse, when he actually started he got a red card!!
