Lol exact same thing that happened to me on vista tried everything to fix it, but nothing worked.  After calling dell they said my OS crashed and I had to re-format my hard drive and use my recovery disks to re-install vista :S, safe mode also worked for me.  But this isn't like your problem, just the symptoms are the same :P.
