Everything around spawn is completely ruined, I ran for over 15 minutes and I still didn't find a piece of land that wasn't griefed nor did I even see a block of dirt for that matter.

That is what happens when you allow people to do what they want. :p If you don't want to starve, kill a skeleton, bone -> bonemeal, use on grass get seeds, then try find some wood. Theres also some bases/food farms nearby spawn that people made to help newbs, but they are in a constant struggle of repairing vs griefing. You'll probably die a few times trying but you will get out of the hell hole of spawn eventually.
