Just put the pickups somewhere a bit higher from the ground (like the armor at the gang base where you have to climb for it), if you are running towards the pickup while some angry asshole is shooting from behind, then you most likely won't succeed to get it without getting killed first. And if you somehow do, then you are definitely worth the refill.
