From what I understand myself, you plug in one of the plugs into the wall and connect it to your modem/router using a Ethernet cable. Any other devices you wish to connect to the network, you can - by plugging in the other plug next to them. How does it work? Basically, you're sending your current Internet connection through the wires around your home at super speeds. As the data arrives at plug #2, the signal is much stronger than it would be if it was connecting wirelessly to your modem/router.

As for Laptops, there are similar products you can consider. Like the Develo dLAN Wireless Extender.
