I consider myself to also be a predominantly RPG player. I dont kill a lot and, seriously, one of the best ways to avoid getting shot is becoming a member of the crew

As this is quite an unrealistic option for most people I can only agree with Hitman to buy a spawnarmor. This increases your chance of surviving a visit by a DM player. Besides that you could increase your typing speed. That way you can escape by teleporting away if you dont feel like fighting (note: if you started a fight or were shooting and are about to lose do not teleport away as this is considered very lame and I agree with that).
Good luck with roleplaying, it is possible on LVP and the people shooting at you are just an extra to make it 'exciting' in some way or another DM is a big part of this server, but there is and there should be enough room for RP'ers.
