Well, from what I know about Australian gun laws:
You can get a licence to have a rifle or shotgun, if you have a valid reason (farmer, for example).
You can get a pistol (not sure on the specifics) if you are part of a shooting club and do it for sport.
Not sure how many witnesses you'll need or "referees" or w/e.
Not sure on the laws for policemen- whether they must keep their government-issued revolver (revolver in Victoria, semi-automatic in NSW) with them or wherever.
