Since I'm a smoker myself I don't think it's possible to tell you the best way to stop smoking, but cold turkey is definitely the way to go. Smoking less every week or every day doesn't work at all. I don't think much of patches either, but haven't tried them myself.
Really not something I'm proud off, on the contrary, but I've been addicted to smoking weed for about two years. It was a time I didn't feel good, had low self esteem and just crawled away in my own world. I've tried many times to stop but couldn't resist (it's just too easy to get here). A change of lifestyle made it possible to go cold turkey immediately and it really worked. There are obvious reasons this won't work for quitting smoking. Smoking is a physical addiction as much as a mental addiction. Try to find a good time to quit. If you're still in a lot of stress it isn't a good time. If you have a few weeks of (holidays?) it could work. Reward yourself every time you can resist the temptation. Buy loads of chewing gum to have some derivation. Be strong at the usual time of day you smoke, like after dinner.
Last but not least, you could go to your GP and ask him/her for some advice.
