Core war. - Jerome - 12-03-2009

64 Core CPU

WHAT...THE...FUCK?!

64 cores?! And Intel have just announced the production of 48 core, and in that article I have linked y'all asses too, it says we will "see a 1,000-core chip coming out by 2014".

Let me ask .. if a quad core processor is really powerful ... wtf do we need 48, 64, 1000 cores for!?

Re: Core war. - cloakster - 12-03-2009

3 years back, Intel promised a 32-core desktop CPU by 2010....they were close, but not right. The same is true for this article.

OK .. but like,

For parallel computing? Theres lots of  100+ core processors out there.

They aren't made for gaming or such a thing, programmers can hardly get their games coded for multi-CPUs.

Theres about 10 games that actually improve a lot by a quadcore, and we won't need more cores for games for the next 5 years, i bet (there will prolly be 1-10 exceptions)

Indeed Hitman. Software sucks.

The hardware geezers are faking the consumer with "OH NOES! TRY OUR NEW OCTACORE! IT ROCKS!!!!" but there is hardly any software that really utilizes all of your cores.

Same story on 64 bit stuff.

:'(

Theres actually LOTS of program running better with 64bit.  IMO 64bit > 32bit nowadays.

A few years ago it might wasnt that good due to driver compatibilities etc, but now you barely find a program that doesnt run under 64bit just as good (or even better) then with a 32bit os

Yeh? What programs then?

Re: Core war. - Hitman - 12-03-2009

like... almost all programs im running?

iTunes, WMP, Photoshop, Steam, G-DATA, FRITZ! WLAN, Alcohol 120%, CPU-Z, FireFox 3.6 Beta, nHancer.

Just the ones that i am running right now in this second.

Theres lots more on my PC tho. (including some games like Crysis, Gothic 3, Lost Planet, ... )

Uh, but how do you know they run better on 64 bits hardware on a 64 bits OS?

Re: Core war. - Hitman - 12-04-2009

Well you might wont notice a difference in "small" applications like STEAM and iTunes, but you notice huge performance increases in games and Photoshop, for example.

Simply because a 32bit-task  can't use more then 2048mb RAM, while 64bit can use way more.

Means, my Photoshop can easily use ~4GB of my RAM, which decreases any lag to a minimum... same goes for games, they just run better when they can use 3-5GB then just 2GB  (well tbh the "standard" Gothic 3 doesnt  need more then 2GB anyways, but if you're using the mods i use 6GB ram is recommended :P)
