How do I put this in a way you'll understand...
Imagine if the Liverpool soccer (football, whatever) team only trained once a week.
Then, I got a group of mates, we formed a team and started training every day for half a month, and then played the Liverpool team in a soccer match.
...who would win?

Liverpool would because they've been around longer than your group of mates. But then all of your 'lots of training' adds up, and won't take long to overtake Liverpool's skill with the 'once a week'.
