I found some wolves last night while playing with a friend on my server...
...and tbh, I'm not finding them very useful
They die fairly quickly, and there's no way to lock them up when you don't want them with you.

Indeed, dogs aka wolves aren't really useful. Did anyone already read Notchs blog about the upcoming version?
Includes
-Minecart boost rails.
-Sapplings for all three kind of trees.
-Weather (ie. Snow and Rain)
-Achievements/Statistics
1.5 is going to be released around the 17th of April, thats what I read.

As for weather and stats, I knew about that. I think I heard something about boost rails but I didn't hear anything about different saplings.

Raised wooden fences work just fine.
