How do you get an avatar for the bottom?

I'm not sure how y'all are posting the avatars on the bottom. Forgive my noobish questions but I looked everywhere and don't see it posted - I understand that there are tons of ways to make them, but how are you posting them? Are you linking to somewhere else that hosts it or what? Can someone explain or tell me where it's explained so that I can make one?

If you have an avatar/sig then goto www.imageshack.us and upload it, then take the one which says this at the start, , then
copy and paste it in your profile, then done.

But anyway, once you have uploaded it to any of these websites, see the code somewhere beneath/above/inside the picture, copy the [IMG] code and post it in Profile > Forum and Profile Information > Signature.

Man I would really like to know what y'all use to really create the cool looking ones with the animated GIF's or whatever that is. That is tight. I'm just using some lame MS Paint and Gimp cuz it's free and I haven't had a version of PhotoShop in too long. Is there any freeware or tips on how or where I can go to make something really cool like what I see alot of other people using? Everytime you guys change your avatar it looks cooler than the one you had before. I wanna do that
