Shin Megami Tensei is a J-RPG series that has been going since the SNES but just recently was shipped outside Japan with SMT: Nocturne for the PS2, which even had Dante from Devil May Cry as a playable character. IMO, this was the first game to implement capture-your-enemy on a large scale (FF5 had a job that did that, but it was just held until you released it) such as Poke-mon. Almost every main SMT game is about having a main character that can recruit the demons (monsters) he fights. Almost every foe in the games are able to be recruited to your side through some means or another (Final bosses, some regular bosses and most humans are off limits). In Nocturne, the only people you couldn't recruit to your party were the scarce human characters and the Final boss (yes, you could recruit Dante once you reached Lvl. 88.) Thing is, the reason it wasn't shipped out of japan until recently is because it's occult themes. It cusses, it has a good amount of gore and doesn't hesitate to do suggestive things in the story. While not extreme in extents, those were the reasons why it wasn't shipped until recently (One of the first things you see in SMT one for the SNES is someone crucified). The games present alot of strategy and isn't one of those "If I level High enough, i can blaze through everything" type of RPGs. Gamespot even went so far as to say that the Hard difficulty on Nocturne would give hardened RPG vets a run for their money.
I was just seeing if anyone has played these awesome games and which ones. My Nocturne broke on me (Game is rare as hell, 3 years old and still 60 dollars in the U.S.) and i have Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha VS The Soulless Army. Both are awesome.
