Consider yourself lucky.. I can't even get into the character selection screen at all.  I press F4 and die and I just respawn as my saved character.

Crankster your first post rocked! and becoz it rocked so hard i will try and help you.

Re install GTA in a different directory
Download the latest version and re install SAMP ( try this first )

See if that helps

Oh and turn off your firewalls and anti virus including the Windows firewall ( Start - Control Panel - Windows Firewall )

crap,hope mine does go down like this(just got it working again),cos i lost my sa disc,bummer
