Basically AlterIW, a famous mod for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 that has been going for years is being shut down, all forums, main servers and the application distribution servers are being shut down indefinitely due to Activision filing a cease and desist copyright claim over the matters. AlterIW is typically a mod that allows high speed dedicated server listings over "failure to PC gamers" lobby systems that were offered in Modern Warfare 2.
The modification while I played it was great, it offered an indie anti-cheat that worked better than the stock one VAC provided, had very fast low ping servers rather than the typical p2p lobby systems given to us by Infinity Ward as their last triumph of a game, and full control over mods in the servers, what plugins, such as B3, other admin modifications that could be implemented into the servers to keep hackers out.
I am someone aside sees this as a wrong move for Activision, this was a great modification that actually had a much higher player count today than the stock Modern Warfare 2 currently right now that is provided on Steam. The up/downside was the mod allowed piracy of the game and offered all of the DLC free, people will be biased on these opinions "Activision doesn't deserve the money they receive from such little content at a high price". But however they release it at that price, people are willing to pay for it that's their fault.
In my opinion, Activision should have just made the indie developers of this mod figure out a way to make a F2P profit off of this rather than shutting down a great mod, for example taking a large percentage of advertisement revenue that they receive from their website and entitle them to some contracts. But instead they took the simple route and just shut down all operations, its inevitable.
AlterIWNet recently started their own version for Black Ops (actually restored the project) and Modern Warfare 3 which is where I believe they went wrong, Activision most likely does not care much for them modifying titles once they're milked out for their money/profit (IE, Modern Warfare 2, World at War, CoD4, previous titles), but when you step into their latest hits where they're making mult-ibillion dollars from they are most likely going to make the move and step in.
That being said if you've played this mod or have checked it out previously, post your opinion/troll hatred below.
