My damn harddisk
#11
WHAT THE- Oh well I had been told it was expensive, but I didn't imagine it'd be THIS expensive. In other words turn around and walk away whistling lol... Thanks for the help Nanook; I'll try, as commented above, first replacing the logic chip, then I'll start looking for recovery companies... Although I'm not very positive at least I can try. It's easy to say 'yeah it's not worth it', but I had a lot of stuff there, about 200 GB (non backed-up that is), some of which I can't get anywhere else on the internet.

It's more frustrating because I had been aiming towards getting an external harddisk like 2 months ago, but could never buy it because I never collected the money. Oh well...

@ Beethi, it's ironic because that dead harddisk was just 2 years old, whereas this PC I'm using right now (my old one) is 5 years old and its hardware still hasn't failed one single time. Noobinha

You could buy the exact same model of hard disk and open them up and swapping the disk in the malfunctioning drive into the new drive. This is basically what DriveSavers does, only they do it in a dustless clean room and pay professionals to do it. I believe they also have some priority software to help recover over-written data.

And I forgot to mention, running some sort of disk utility or data recovery software on the drive could reduce the chances of recovering your data (even if you decide not to pay them and do it yourself).

Ah don't worry in that aspect, I won't touch the disk until I'm sure what to do, I'll let the ones who supposedly know about the issue do their job regardless of the final result... I'm 98% sure that if I do it all myself I'll end up ufcking everything up.

And thanks for pointing the issue about the recovery software, even though I never thought about using any it sure will help me avoid using it in the future.
