Phenom II
#1
ohai

I've been looking for a new CPU for my pc, since this one really is the bottleneck of my system. anyway, I am planning on getting the AMD Phenom II X4 940, but since I'm not sure if it works with my mainboard, I figured I'd make a little topic here. there must be some people out here that know some stuff about hardware :D :D

oh yeah, my mainboard is the "K9N MS-7250"

If someone needs more information, just ask here or on IRC :))

The Phenom II 920 and 940 (still AM2+ socket CPUs) work with every AM2+ Phenom ready mainboard, if the mainboards is cooled enough to cool the 125W TDP.

If you mean the newer Phenoms, like the 945 and so on which are socket AM3, they wont work with your motherboard.

Check if your mainboard is AM2+ compatible and supports 125W CPUs.

Here is AMD's Phenom II lineup:

As you can see, the PhenomII 720 is a triplecore, not a quad.

Twilight, the AM3 CPUs wont work on your mainboard.

If the AM2+ CPUs work on your mainboard depends if it is a AM2+ mainboard (NOT AM2) and if it supports 125W TDP CPUs.

EDIT: I think it wont work, because i think your mainboard is a AM2 mainboard, not AM2+. But i am not 100% sure.

You can run a old am2 cpu like 3400+ on a brand new am3 motherboard.
And you can run a brand new am3 ready cpu on a old am2 motherboard.

In witch case you may need a new bios for the motherboard.

You are comparing to intel, they are worse. A old 775 board doesnt support new 775 cpu etc.. Amd is diffrent.

After some googling, the Phenom 940 will work on a AM2 board but you gotta check the wattage and if it'll support to wattage then it'll work but then you'd need a BIOS update.

Correct, some older am2 boards, for example 780. Doesnt support 140w
It can, depens of what brand. But it doesnt support it.

In that case, choice a cpu who doesnt need more watt then your motherboard handle to give.

@FarePak

it has to be an AM2+ socket mainboard, AM2 wont work i guess.

@mjaa:

Am2 CPUs on AM3 mainboard = work
AM3 CPUs on AM2 mainboard = wont work due to the new included DDR3-memory controller.

The 940 does work on some AM2 motherboards and the new 720 with AM3 socket would work on AM2+ and AM3 motherboards and maybe lower, according to AMD.
