There's been some bot around which can talk and such for a very long time now, just can't remember its name (eliza or something?).
Anyway, my point is that this is possible, however it's very hard, as you have so much to take into account.
You should start off on replying to stuff such as "hi there" I guess, and then "erm, hi" like where it can be anywhere in a message and stuff. Build up a load of rules until you have loads.. and it can kinda talk?
One thing's for sure -- it probably won't act very human.
