Look at it this way. You have a water balloon. Ants are on the water balloon yea, but when you throw a fat rock at it, it blows up. I don't think we'd survive something like this easily.
And yes, RSole seems to share my opinion on this. I'm not ruling out this happening, but it seems sort of odd that an asteroid would hit on the same date as some religions point as the end of the world - sounds like a modern-day controlling of the masses via religion.
