Borat, you've been watching too many movies. You cannot just say something to the effect of "Asteroid? Bring it on! Let's just shoot it with a nuke and Bob's your uncle we're saved. I R 1337 human!". The reason for that is because it could make things worse, depending on what the asteroid is made from, including the possbility of global radiation poisoning after impact.
I agree with tomozj, I don't think there is enough evidence to support the end of the world coming in 2012 (I'll be too busy watching the Olympics to care anyway) and I'm not going to rely on religion. However, it's not really a case of if an asteroid will hit us, it's more a case of when. We could be lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it) within our lifetimes and not have to deal with such a potential disaster. In any case, I'm not too worried about the end of the world coming any time soon.
