Being a SW fan I've read a lot about this, and the only way a lightsaber could keep its set length (at this point in time anyway) is with a hugely powerful magnetic field, to stop it from extending forever.
Even still, the lightsaber wouldn't remain room temp until it hits something, it'd be hot from the beginning.
But I agree with fry, they use technology that is impossible now and may well be impossible to create in the future, but the beliefs are entirely possible, and similar to other religions- not to 'give in to your hate' etc etc.
