There was no egg, chicken came first. The chain of events depends on which theory you believe.

If you are a creationist, you belive God created the chicken which later laid the eggs to further propagate the species.

If you are an evolutionist, the chicken evolved from some prehistoric animal and attained the ability to lay the eggs through evolution, thus laying the eggs and thusly propagating the species.

simple as that.
