How often should a laptop battery be replaced?

My old netbook's battery lasted only around half a year, afterwards its life shortened, it wouldn't even charge to 80%
Not sure if that's normal or if I wasn't taking care of it properly. So maybe it depends.
What's the point of asking though? If it's still working then why buy a new one? Even if it's been years...
