1.8 will include a lot of new map features, stuff like new caverns, ridges, oceans, and even rivers.
Because of this, I think it would be interesting to start using a new map after 1.8's release.
"BUT RIEN, WHAT ABOUT ALL THE STUFF PEOPLE BUILT?"
Well, this is a bit of a problem, yes. One solution would be copying buildings from our current worldand pasting them into a new one, but this would be incredibly time consuming, not to mention we would first have to explore a large part of the map, just so we have enough space to place all the things people built.
I'd like to hear opinions on what we should do after 1.8's release, should we keep the current map? Should we copy-paste the stuff from our old world into a new one? Should we let players choose a small selection of stuff to keep, and then place that in the new world?
