Power supply

This is the deal:

Yesterday the guy I was talking about came, and we tried to start the PC with a cheap PSU he brought... Luckily it started well, but we had to un-plug the videocard because his cheapass PSU didn't have any PCI Express slots. For the rest the PC started normally, so I assume nothing besides the PSU got burnt.

What happened? I was told that my current dead PSU isn't bad at all, and I don't think it is either, but what might have caused all of this is the fact that I was plugging my PC directly to the wall. I was doing this because when the PC was bought, when I had it plugged to the voltage regulator (dunno how you call it), it would restart every ~5 minutes. I took it back where it was bought, and they told me that it was due to the voltage regulator not having enough power to feed the PC, so they told me to plug it directly to the wall, and so I did - big mistake.

The day that the PSU failed, my dad moved one of the electrical system's breakers back up because it was accidentally pulled down, and he did it while the PC was on. It might have created a shortcircuit (a proof of that is that my bedroom's light bulb died as well that day), but my PSU failed hours later, when I was using the PC, yet the same day.

Being all that said, now I guess that's what caused my harddisk to die back in October as well, and I now understand that I should never have my PC without a voltage regulator, especially in this appartment where the electrical installation is old as fuck. I'm lucky nothing else on the PC died.

Now, regarding advises, thanks cloakster, but I checked its price here and it costs about 146 dollars, funny huh? Even if bought it via newegg the shipment taxes and all that shit would increase its price to almost the same, so I guess I'll have to discard that option... I'll go PSU hunting soon, so whenever I find a good and affordable one I'll update this topic. Thank you guys for your interest.
