Bad Copmany 2's story is pretty cool, but the multiplayer is way better. 
If you were to get it you should buy it and play the multiplayer as well.
Back to the story. It's kind of short but is nicely made and there are lots of action too. I have no idea if you should play Bad Company's story first though, but I haven't played it and I understood Bad Company 2's entire story.
