Processing (CPU/processor strength)
The thing that effects your ping is Distance.

The CPU calculates everything, that is correct.
But to affect the ping today, you'll need a CPU from like uh, 2000...?

And you could say it's the distance, but it's not toooo correct.
As ping is how long it takes to send and receive data from the server, that's just it. Not the distance.
Distance can make the ping go up, but if it's a perfect and flawless line it's going through (non-shared). It could hardly affect anything at all.
But we don't have these flawless lines, heh. Unless it's for the military or something.

So okay yes, distance can cause your ping to be higher.
But there are other things that can cause this. Such as;

• Your mate playing an online game on your network, or maybe just opening a webpage, downloading etc..
  Then you will have to share the connection, which will automatically double the ping (or something like it).
  
• Loads of people using your broadband connection at the same time (in other houses/apartments).
  As some people notice, the ping can go higher at the evening.
