I agree with TJ and Stef. May i suggest that you dont walk around with alot of money aimlessly, this wud be jsut liek driving around, stunting etc. Bank it, then go and have some fun 
If you are tryign to make money from propertys, which is almost impossible anyway beacuse it costs say 37000 to buy and u eaarn 1000 a mintue . . .
then bank ur money as regularly as possible, take out only the money u need to buy the prorps. This also reduces how much u lsoe if you do get killed by another player.
The server crashes can be annoying but it seems there is nothing or very little that can be done about it.
Enjoy the game as fully as you can, cos its the best game i have ever played
