it has to be an AM2+ socket mainboard, AM2 wont work i guess.

Am2 CPUs on AM3 mainboard = work
AM3 CPUs on AM2 mainboard = wont work due to the new included DDR3-memory controller.

The 940 does work on some AM2 motherboards and the new 720 with AM3 socket would work on AM2+ and AM3 motherboards and maybe lower, according to AMD.
