I don't think they ruined it. I play mostly with the standard weapons anyway, or weapons that've been around since like 2009.
Anyway, had a go with Source Filmmaker the other day, this is what I ended up with. Not that great but it's my first try, so yeah...

I liked it. Good lipsyncing.
Making it ftp did have its advantages. Dieing servers regained popularity. Still I'm not a big fan of Valves money making tactics, but hey if it gives us awesome games I guess it's a ok.
