Onlive - Flyby - 06-26-2010

Onlive is basically an interactive youtube video as you can stream games to your PC (wired connection of at least 1.5mbps for standard and 5mbps for high def).

Trying out OnLive

Anyone else get an account?

:D just got my account set up and it runs much better then what I what expected (stream my game PC GOODBYE). The only issue is that there aren't enough games atm the few they have are good but nothing really that will keep your interest for long.

oh and some of you who follow up on onlive might of heard of it only works on wired connections (no wifi) but I found a workaround to that and it works pretty well (although drops from 720p to standard definition).

From what I heard they are bringing it to Europe after the American release (within a year).

Re: Onlive - Turkey - 06-26-2010

That's a really awesome solution for those that have low-end PCs or laptops, since laptops are heating up pretty quick compared to PCs. The only bad thing is that you can only use it if you have internet.

Does it lag ping wise on 1080p? I may consider trying it out once it's available in Germany..

Why that?

Re: Onlive - Rien - 06-26-2010

Pretty sure we already had a topic about this somewhere, but I'll say it again; Unless it works flawlessly, people aren't going to use it.
If millions of people are to use this, you'll get some lag eventually, and noone want lag when they're playing a single player game.

I've been using and its been working well with hardly any delay in the controllers even when using this work around to run it on wifi. The only issue is maybe a fps drop here and there but still very playable and if anything comparable to most console games that hover around 30 FPS.

They say its to make sure it runs fine since any lag might cause delays (like controlling or some other issue). Although I used this

In wifi it runs really well but just at a lower res but still really good.

Re: Onlive - Rien - 06-26-2010

yeah, but keep in mind that it's not being used by as many people right now as there will be in the future.

true but i'd imagine they'd try and meet the demand if this were to get really popular.

High def I think is set to 720p Turkey, nothing higher at the moment.

Re: Onlive - Rien - 06-26-2010

Sure they will, but for example; if Black Ops is going to be released, _a lot_ of people are going to want to play it. Just like on Steam, servers won't be able to handle it, and either you have to wait for shizzle to calm down, or you'll be playing on laggy servers. Something that isn't an issue on Steam.

Re: Onlive - Hitman - 06-26-2010

People that tried OnLive out already complained about major lag issues + performance flaws.

The idea behind their system may seem great, but they still have to work a lot to make it run good.

Re: Onlive - ZheMafo - 06-26-2010

I'm trying it out now, waiting for it.

Isn't this still on a beta stage?

But I wouldn't imagine them allowing it to be that laggy that they'd lose a huge chunk of there base. There will be times when the service wont work as it should and you brought up the example of steam, when that first came out it too lagged, had issues and etc., there's even a GIF mocking the early steam.

Here's an early article on steam

oh found a number being thrown around of 25,000 current onlive members, so yea its not a lot but I think that was there intention (PR!).

There was one guy who tried onlive that had borrowed the account from a friend and gave a preview of it. The issue with this is the accounts are tied to data centers.

"I first have to admit that I don't actually have a beta account with the OnLive service; instead a friend of a friend of a friend passed to me their login information after I requested it in order to write a preview of the technology.  Why is this a note-worthy point to make?  There is a chance that OnLive is only selecting beta members that are on ISPs close to their current data centers and as I live outside that area that could affect my experiences with cloud-based gaming. "

So far experience differ but I've been having a really smooth game (even on wifi!!) and i've seen others from as far as Florida giving it good reviews.
