Who doesn't like Mario Kart? - Chillosophy - 06-07-2010 I was thinking of unique minigames that no other server have. In the process I was thinking about Mario Kart. The cute, but addictive kartracing game that has been around for years and always is fun to play. We could do something like that. Based on Mario Kart, with some adjustments to make it suitable for SA-MP. My mind kind of exploded thinking of stuff, so it's a bit of a long read, sorry about that. ![]() Super Venturas Kart, - please come with a better name -, will look like Mario Kart in a lot of ways. Every track is semi-linear; there's one main route to get to the end, but every map features some shortcuts. These shortcuts, again like in Mario Kart, are difficult routes with obstacles. They could save you time, but there's a distinct possibility you will die trying. In the screenshot there's a jump to the main route, try to ignore the rest of the unfinished map ![]() The kart minigame will also feature powerups to make it a whole lot more interesting. I'll get to that later. Some powerups are easy to pickup, some require a detour. Powerups will always give you an advantage. Also similar to Mario Kart, I was thinking of different styles of maps. I thought of four:
Every map needs to pick one of these styles (there could also be a 'special' style for everything that doesn't fit in these categories, like Rainbow Road doesn't fit in any of the styles in Mario Kart). Objects could be re-used, and we could make some sort of a template map in MTA in which all the default objects for that style are displayed, so they can be easily copied and used. For a start, it would be great to have 4 maps in every category, with increasing difficulty. The first map could be the one in the screenshot (which is deliberately vague, because I hardly have anything done yet). No difficult jumps or obstacles. Every next map will be a bit harder and the last will have a lot of exploding or drowning karts. These same maps will be featured in different cups (so we also need 4 cups). Something like "Newbie cup", "Normal cup", "Pro cup" and "Special cup". Every cup has 4 tracks from all different styles. The newbie cup has all the easiest maps and so on. To attract a lot of players there could be an announcement every hour to subscribe to the cup. Just racing with kart isn't fun. If you're still reading, this is where it gets interesting. Spread out over the map, there are nitro (nos) powerups. These will disappear after being picked up and respawned a while later. There are no repairs. You can only repair your vehicle at the pit stop: ![]() The pitstop will take some time, depending on the damage of the vehicle. I think 2 seconds + (0.04 * damage could be fair. If a vehicle is a bit damaged, say 20%, it will take 2.8 seconds. If a vehicle is badly damaged, say 80%, it will take 5.2 seconds.Powerups are also spread out over the map. These will make the game really addictive. Here are some possible powerups:
Based on the impact of the powerup, they should appear more or less often. A mine doesn't cause much problems (players can drive around them if they're careful), but changing weather will get annoying. Some random thoughts:
I'll wait for developers input on the needed development time and if they like the idea before I proceed with mapping
Re: Who doesn't like Mario Kart? - Kase - 06-07-2010 This is gonna be great
Re: Who doesn't like Mario Kart? - Rien - 06-07-2010 I love all of your ideas Chillo ![]() +1 Re: Who doesn't like Mario Kart? - bubbles - 06-07-2010 I did a complex kart map + races before on a previous server I worked on. The small industrial island south of Los Santos was closed off and could only be driven around in karts. Its a perfect location with the roads, the detailed warehouses where you can drive through and the platforms around alot of the warehouses. Made a few tweaks too like sewer pipes been lifting via cranes... in short, and without an ego boost it was good. Of course it didn't have any of the cool powerups you suggested and are availible on the new LVP version. If made with the standard racing format thenn each race would be unique, and seperate and therefore have its own map.. so different locations i.e a map for a desert kart race and a nature one is doable... However I'm not really a fan of the current race system on LVP. Personally I would prefer a single map where ALL races are held on... so they overlap. Its nice doing a race on a map and having a few more races being held on the same map.. sometimes with overlapping courses.. Removes the isolation you feel when doing races/minigames on LVP. My point been I think for your kart idea.. have all the kart races on the one map... pick a small section of the map to have all the races around so its like seperate mini game world that when someone joins they have a choice of race to join etc etc Also, speaking from experience doing a good kart race map takes a fair bit more time and effort than making an normal race map as theres more objects like rails that have to be included and tweaked, due to the slow speed, handling and perspective of the kart. Just my 2 cents, great idea. I would assign your best mapper to work on the project alone however as they really need to be decent. Drive around in a cart for a while and you'll see, insignificent things in a normal car like a kerb are far more an issue when in a kartRe: Who doesn't like Mario Kart? - Unbreak - 06-08-2010 Nice!!
Re: Who doesn't like Mario Kart? - Chillosophy - 06-08-2010 Short reply, I'm bored as hell in the bus with my phone lol @bubbles, that sounds interesting! Do you still have the map(s) and/or screenshots? I'm curious what that looks like
Re: Who doesn't like Mario Kart? - Matthias - 06-08-2010 Awesome idea! All do-able as well . Sorry for the short reply, huge headache atm, I'll make a longer one later
Re: Who doesn't like Mario Kart? - LilBoy - 06-08-2010 Awesome idea! Re: Who doesn't like Mario Kart? - bubbles - 06-08-2010 As far as I know theres an old version of it still running on the shell of the server I once worked on. I will PM you the server deatails and you can go and check it out for youself Chilly Think I may have an updated version of the map buried around here somewhere, I shall look Re: Who doesn't like Mario Kart? - LasTRace - 06-08-2010 Absolutely Nice Chillo ![]() reminds me the game with mini-cars which called "Revolt" ![]() LR |
