Intel Core 2 Duo is pretty awesome, I got a E8500, works good as hell, but it depends on your motherboard if you can use it.

what is your current mainboard and how much cash do you want to spend?
edit: download CPU-Z and run it (no installation needed) and post screenshots of both, the CPU and mainboard tab.

Yeah, get an Q9550 or something around that. Your mainboard supports them, although it might need a bios-update to recognize the new CPU

You can find driver updates and BIOS updates on your mainboard manufacturers website.
In this case it's www.ami.com
There's two download links to the far right to help you discover the drivers and BIOS updates available for your board.
