The cultivation topic - Felle - 02-28-2009

In the need of something to do I've cultivated some plants. To inspire and interest the fellow users here I am starting this topic to keep you updated on how my plants are doing. Questions and/or opinions are always welcome.

What I have sown so far is:
Tomato
Chili
Clementine
Orange
Radish
Avocado
Paprika

What I haven't sown yet, but will do later:
Dill
Parsley

Other ones I was thinking of:
Mints (a few different types, f.e marjoram/oregano)
Chive
Thyme
Cress
and possibly some other ones (mostly aromatic plants).

This is the first time I do something like this, so it's mostly for testing for now, and the plants I've sown this far are in pretty small amounts. All of them, except the chili, are best sewing later in the spring (around april), so they will probably die sooner or later since I can't get them out on our balcony until May perhaps. In other words, I'll probably sew most of them again later.
Chili is however (at least in the climate I live in) best sewing in February/March, so I'm making a serious attempt to keep them alive for this year at least.

Some pictures I took yesterday (click for larger size):

I can really recommend giving it a try, it doesn't take much time, nor is it expensive (you could easily save money if you have a few successful harvests), it's fun following how fast it grows and it's always nice having a few plants around. One of the things that inspired me was the thought of eating my own homemade chili sauce... :)

I have no idea how this will go, if it fails I'll just not update it, but if there is an interest I will do so regularly. Feel free to share your own stories on the subject.

EDIT:
Here are some dates where stuff has happened (I keep notes in case I ever need to know):
7/2: Sewed clementine (10 seeds), paprika (~14 seeds) and tomato (~10 seeds)
10/2: Sewed avocado (1 core)
12/2: Small sprouts of tomato, about 7 of them. Grew pretty fast to about 3 cm.
14/2: Sewed orange (7 seeds)
15/2: Sewed chili (5 seeds)
17/2: A few small sprouts of paprika. Also re-planted the tomatoes in a bigger pot.
20/2: Sewed radish (19 seeds)
22/2: Already a few small sprouts of radish.
23/2: More radish and one sprout clementine.
24/2: One more sprout clementine, plus even more radish.
26/2: One more sprout clementine. Two small sprouts of chili.
27/2: Totally 5 sprouts of chili.
1/3: Re-planted radish & paprika. Two small (probably clementine) sprouts.

Looks cool, seems you are preparing plants for when all cash becomes worthless (credit crunch and such). Would be cool if you give some updates regularly.

Wow, looking very good so far. Sound like a very fun project :)

I used to like growing plants, but then i got bored once they grew bigger since the only cool part for me was in the couple weeks after planting them...seeing that first sprout :)

I too like sitting around watching plants grow...

Seriously though they're looking good so far, but couldn't try it at mine with me playing football in my back a lot.

Thanks for the comments guys! The first sprout (as cloakster mentioned) is indeed the coolest part. I can imagine I'll be pretty proud if any of them carry fruit some day too, but I don't mind taking care of them now since all I have to do is to keep an eye on them and give them some water every now and then. I'm keeping them in a south/west window which means they have as much sun as they basically can get during this time of year. I also have a low energy lamp which works in addition to the sun, which I keep on around 12-14 hrs per day.

I shouldn't be having too much trouble with insects/bugs/diseases, however I just had to kill this pretty creepy spider climbing a wall near the plants... :X

A bit too early for a picture update, but I can tell you that they seem to be doing fine, chili's grown ~2 cm since those first pictures were taken.

Re: The cultivation topic - Felle - 03-01-2009

Sorry for doubleposting, I just need to update you on what I've done today..
  • I've re-planted the paprika/pepper and it's went pretty good. They needed support standing straight first, but are doing it on their own now :)
  • I've re-planted the radishes. Most need support to be standing, only a few ones are managing on their own. I hope they'll recover. :/
  • The chili have grown a lot, are probably double as tall as they were when I took the pictures in the first post.. :D
  • I see two small sprouts of what I think is clementine (though they're kinda half-way in on where the radishes used to be).
  • The tomatoes are doing fine, and nothing's happened with the avocado nor orange.

And remember to send me the sample of your plants!

You should try "cultivating" some marijuana.

Re: The cultivation topic - Corleone - 03-02-2009
