Thanksgiving is a United States holiday, and allows USAians to give thanks to the natives that helped out the first settlers from Europe.

You mean Americans, and the Native Americans are who we're "thankful" for (even though there's a bit of controversy around Thanksgiving; and yes, I know how stupid that "politically correct" bullshit is :+). More Thanksgiving information and urban legends can be found here, or possibly even there.
