try loggin out, then loggin back in after a few minutes (so you don't auto-log-in) afaik it should work then

Press F4 ingame and type /kill. Choose a skin and use /savechar. If you suspect it is a bug and can provide details, then refer to the bug section to see it fixed in future versions.
