Re: Test if your PC can run GTA IV - Hitman - 01-09-2009

No.

HD 4870X2 has exactly same memory as GTX 280.

the X2 has: 2x 1024MB (and uses 1024mb, because every gpu renders the same frame in their own memory twice.. i wont explain now, you can read everything above)

to the 4850X2 - a HD 4850X2 2x 1024MB doesnt exist as far as i know, maybe it does, then it will outperform the normal GTX 260 and HD 4870 for sure. But still it has just 1024MB.

But hey, 500W is damn much. Since PowerPlay 2.0 doesnt work on 4850 and 4870 (on the X2 cards it works), they wont undervoltage in idle so  it still needs full power.

500W is damn expensive. For example, germany. (i know its hardcore expensive here). 1kWh (=1000 Watt) costs 20 euro-cents.

So, leaving online your computer 2 hours, costs 20 cent for you. here. Now think about leaving the PC online 8 hours per day the whole year. I know that your PC wont kill 500W every hour, but 350 for sure with two  4850s. still damn much, if you live in germany where this is expensive.

To the micro stutter thing - some people do not notice them. Somehow, it depends on your eyes. For some people it just isnt smooth, while other people would love to play so. So its not just the game if you notice the micro stutter, the sensibility of your eyes play a role too. For myself, i notice them in a lot of games.

Well, with CFX and SLI not working - there are possibilities.

You can make a lot of  games (not all) "SLI compatible" with the tool "nHancer", .exe-renaming and other stuff. I dont know if nHancer works with ATI cards too, but i doubt it.

But the good thing is: every GTX 260, HD 4870 or GTX 280 have anough power for all games. You dont need dual-gpu cards if you do not play on ultra high resolutions like 2560x1900 with 4x Anti Aliasing.

Re: Test if your PC can run GTA IV - mjaa - 01-09-2009

GTX 280 has 800 something GDDR3 memory.

4870x2 has 1024mb PER CORE, with mean if the cores got same job they can use 1024 each.. It is not locked some how.. sure its better if the cores could have accest to all of it toghetter.

And it is  GDDR5 In much higher speeds then the gtx cards.. The memory in 4870 can not compare with it in the GTX 280.  the Gddr5 memory is MUCH faster

Here you got a 4850x2  for arround 300 euro

Wrong of me about how much power they needed.

Remember, this is for the WHOLE SYSTEM, not just the graphiccards.

with hd4850 Crossfire it takes 310W  full load

with gtx 280 the system takes 278 full load

Not so big diffrent.

Here you got some stats just for fun:

The 4850 / 4870  CF pwns gtx 280 quite hard.

Re: Test if your PC can run GTA IV - Hitman - 01-11-2009

Hey, the GTX 280  has 1024MB of GDDR3 Ram too ;)

The GTX 260 has 896MB

Well, there are some differents between GTX series and HD 4870:

both of them have to increase their  bandwith in GB/s.
You can increase the bandwith in 2 ways:

- make the memory interface bigger
- increase speed of memory

a little metapher, its quite easy but you can understand it better then:

see the data the card renders like  water in a river - if more data runs down the river, you have a bigger bandwith.

to increase the bandwith, the water can run either FASTER (thats the memory speed) or the river can be made more wide, so more water runs through it at the same time.

Its like this:

GTX 280  memory speed: 1100MHz (1100 GDDR3, has 2 cycles so its 1100*2 = 2200MHz effective speed)
HD 4870X2 memory speed: 900 MHz (900 GDDR5, has 4 cycles so its 900*4 = 3600MHz effective speed)

But now the GTX 280 memory interface is: 512Bit
while the one of HD 4870 cards is: 256bit

Its just that ATI has chosen to increase memory speed to increase the bandwith while NVidia doubled the memory interface - in pure power, there are like 5% difference between GDDR5 and GDDR3 - dont be blind just because you see MHz ;)

Both have almost the same bandwith, so thats no advantage or disadvantage for none of the cards ;).

will i be able to play the game with 1,8 Ghz procesor >?
since the rest passes the test.

yea but you'll face lags.

Re: Test if your PC can run GTA IV - Peter - 01-11-2009

Played GTA IV today with my new configuration, everything on the highest settings, except for the viewing distance which wouldn't go further than 80% :) Working awesomely, get about 45-50 fps (@1440x900) and no framelag at all, at any time.

Intel Core2Quad Q9450 @ 3.0 Ghz, 12 MB L3 Cache
8 Gigs of DDR2-PC7200 RAM
nVidia GTX 280 MSI-OC (fastest 280 around)
2.8 TB of harddrive space
Creative X-Fi Platinum
Logitech Z-5500 speakerset
2x 19" Widescreen monitors

Ah, nice Peter.
I have not a computer as good as yours, but I can tell you I can run it, with the same settings! o/

Intel DuoCore 2,67GHz
4GB DDR2 RAM
nVidia 8800GT
0.8TB disk space

Re: Test if your PC can run GTA IV - mjaa - 01-11-2009

Hitman:

If you say so,  still.. the ati X2 card outperform the GTX cards.

Nvidia isn't a greate buy today. They cost more then they perform. Sad, but true.

Ati is the shit now days.

Example:

GTX 280 cost arround 400 euro but would be cost arround 280 euro to be pricy against hd4850x2 "300 euro"

GTX 260 216core cost arround 280 euro but would be cost arround 240 euro to be pricy against hd4870 512 "220 euro"

9800gtx cost arround 180 euro but would be cost arround 150 euro to be pricy against hd4850 "150 euro"

9800gt cost arround 120 euro but would be cost arround 90 to be pricy against hd4830 "110 euro"

9500gt cost arround 70 euro but would be cost arround 40 euro to be pricy against hd4670 "60 euro"

But they dont. Atleast not in Sweden.

Ati are and gonna be best of price / fps

I don't know what about GTX 295 against HD4870X2,  witch is best buy.

Maybe nvidia got a advantage there.

Still.. Nvidia suck.

i got a asus TOP HD4870 and are very happy about it.
