My 4GB ram cost my a whooping 85 euros, although it is DDR3 but also its the cheapest Corsair DDR3 version of 4GB ram, not Corsair value thingy btw.

well 4 gig ram aint expensive
i got 2 sticks of 2 GiG DDR2 for just 70 dollars

The fact that its a 64bit OS does not make a difference on the amount of RAM it uses

it does, because an 64bit OS emulates every 32-bit task (which are almost all tasks) to an 64bit task by simply adding 32-"Zero's" behind the command, so that it is a "fake" 64bit task.
That doesnt take a lot of Ram, but still, it takes some
