Hilarious. You are right in stating that it is possible to change the characters using either programming language, but there are far easier ways to do so (and more importantly: people who have done it before you). A quick Google search should provide a solution here.

Go to your GTA San Andreas folder > Models > delete fonts.txd > copy the new fonts.txd from here http://gtat.dracoblue.net/forum/showroom/fonts-by-demo/12437/0/
