I think it's true that the game industries do charge way too much for their games, but they do spend a lot of time and money making them. If everyone just pirated them, they'd go out of business and we wouldn't have games anyway.
On the other hand, spending hundreds of dollars, euros or pounds on games which you'll either grow out of, get bored of or no one will play in a few years time is a pointless waste of money.
I always download games. If I like them, I'll buy them. If not, I'm not going to waste money buying it just so that I can sell it to some guy for half the price I bought it for.
