is it just me or what... those graphics.. arent even special...

some pics ive seen are not so quality ones ... its still pretty much low poly..

il try to explane a bit..

vehicles and road
1.

Its still low poly on this one.
the front of the bike is just an plane with wrapped textures..
the fuel tank of the truck has what i can see 10 segments and the truck itself is as flat as it can gets.
all the textures are still low quality.

environment

2.

again (like in san andreas) the roadtextures are low quality.
on the left bottum side you see a man with black clothes. if you see that container on the left you see the verry low textures on the metalwork and the wood.

cars and buildings
3.

these cars are not verry improved in polycounts..

its pretty much still made out of boxes with smoothen edges.

now look to the left building. these bricks arent realy what you say clean high quality textures.

this is a close view of a car. if you look to the hood of the car. you see how flat the car actualy is. without much detail in the boxmodel.

now look at the passenger seat. its made out of..maybe 3 boxes what you see. + again the texture is verry verry low.

next

probebly Peds
4.

look at his face. its verry low poly again and pretty made up out of nice texturing.  but still low quality.

Niko and buildings
5.

this is a verry nice picture i realy like.
but..theres a but.    that verry nice lighted hands ... is just texture work with bump map.

and i realy like this picture..

but again look under the fire of the gun.. look to that fence.. and thats something i dont like about it.

Its just a single plane..means its not wider then 1 pixels. it just got a texture with a alpha map. meaning its just a texture of the fence. and all the thinks what should be transparent.. is made black so it gets filtered out.  this is not a problem in a game. this usaly gets done alot.

But then with high quality textures.. same for the windows on the buildings. low quality and low poly.

6.

trees

lets look at those trees.

if you know somethings about 3d and 3dsmax like me.. you probebly know what foliage is.
foliage gets used to make realistic trees in a game or other 3d stuff.

foliage is build up like this:

you got the tree:

then you use foliage to make leaves like this. (these are only little squares wich are normaly leaves)

you could have somthing like in collin mcrea dirt :

SO what does rockstar using?  planes. square or rectangular planes..( look at the leaves)

easy, but not nextgen

7.
Texture on Niko

dont have to say much here. look at his hands. low texture.

low texture in the car( this is normal, you wont see it normaly ingame)  but also verry low texture on the bridge. and again plane used with alpha channels.

Conclusion:

So what is my conclusion..? its not a so special game as for the graphics.. they used exelent lightning, lots of bumpand Lots of different textures what we missed in san andreas.
They still use low poly models and they still using low quality textures.  and using lots of specular levels.

i think it will not be as heavy for the consoles/ pcs as many people think. the only part of the game what should be hard to run is the lights. but still..

i dont realy think it will have a uge system requirements is it does come out on the pc.

so :

It will be on the PC, when PCs catch on. They need to be a little better before we can see games like this able to be fiddled with to run. Same superb quality? Maybe. Who knows what will happen - technology is moving forward and evolving so fast.

nothing personal :) you know..

But these techniques can be aplied by the pcs now. and not only with a 8800 videocard...

Update !

First of all.. lets look to the san andreas sultan model.

this is how a carmodel will look like if its opened in 3dsmax.

when we try to tear apart the objects we see. damege models and a rough boundry model.

lets look to the san andrea ingame sultan.

now lets look what i created after some ajustments to the reflection. (keep in mind its a render in 3dsmax and you cant realy compair it to ingame footage.)

Ive added some refections like in the gta4 models. i just used a bitmap reflection of a screenshot i made of gta:sa.
Highered the specular level and glossyness. (just like in the gta4 ones)
For shadows i used softshadows because the shadows in gta4 arent detailed shadow maps.

I dident got the textures !  so had to make the headlights with a color.

I dident changed anything to the model... i just changed the lights and the reflection.

Now look at the wireframes of gta san andreas and try to compair to the gta4. ( since i cant look into the gta4 models :P . i made up the verry verry rough lines.

Conclusion:

Again we see  not verry high poly in the carmodels.

But the lights does it all +textures

Re: GTA 4 discussion - Cave - 07-01-2007

VERY nicle explained Hawk, nicely done O+

Re: GTA 4 discussion - parry - 07-01-2007

Yeah nice explaining there, i think the game will be better though when it comes out, texture-wise etc.

Re: GTA 4 discussion - H@wker - 07-01-2007

nope i wont think so. once they textured it they wont gonna change it.. texturing is realy hard. like those windows, those textures fits these windows... once it done. i wont think they change it... its just a fact of rockstar and gta. they use low quality textures.

Re: GTA 4 discussion - Ben - 07-01-2007

Oh well, i dont think the graphics will make much of a difference, the game in general will just ROCK

Re: GTA 4 discussion - parry - 07-09-2007

Quote:The August issue of GamesTM (a multi-format games magazine based in the UK) contains a world exclusive first look at the new gameplay in Grand Theft Auto IV. Here's a brief run-down on some of the new stuff mentioned:

* The demo begins in Grand Theft Auto IV's equivalent of Times Square: Star Junction.

* The mobile phone can be used to gain weapons. In the demo that GamesTM saw, Niko calls his associate Little Jacob, who is a caribbean arms dealer. No more Ammu-Nation it seems. After a brief chat with Jacob, he tells Niko to meet him in an alleyway in Rotterdam Hill, where he purchases the weapons from him.

* Niko can use taxis to get around (presumably he can use the phone to call a taxi). The police are much more vigilant in GTA IV, and sometimes it is less hassle using a taxi than jacking someone's car. The trip-skip option is available for convenience.

* In the demo, Niko recieves a call concerning "shady lawyer" Goldberg, of Goldberg, Ligner & Shyster (GLS). Niko can use the internet in GTA4. He heads over to an internet café called the "Tw@ Café," and hops onto a PC before surfing. He uploads his CV to the GLS website so he can get an interview - before killing Goldberg. He receives a phonecall confirming the time of his interview. The web is available from any computer in the game, and provides a hub for all sorts of interactivity within Liberty City.

* Missions in GTA IV can be interrupted. The interview isn't until tomorrow, which means you can carry out other business until then. This suggests you can be do several missions at the same time, and missions can take place over several days, perhaps.

* Next in the demo, Niko pays a visit to somebody called McReary, at Castle Gardens, a coast-side hangout overlooking the Statue of Hapiness. McReary has had a memory stick stolen from him which contains sensitive data, and he wants Niko to retrieve it for him. He takes another cab to the meeting point, where the target is standing amongst a crowd of people. The problem is he doesn't know which one it is, so he gives him a call to see which one picks up their phone. Niko shoots the target three times in the back of the head, before taking the memory stick and making a run for it. He gains a three-star wanted level as a result.

* Committing crimes isn't as easy in GTA IV. You gain a wanted level for every crime you commit, aslong as there are witnesses present. Once you have gained a wanted level, a visible (circular) search area appears on the radar, and if you escape this area without being spotted, your wanted level will flash and disappear. If you are spotted, however, the search area's position changes, and centers on where you were last spotted. So unlike previous GTA games, the police don't always know where you are. They can't catch you unless they find you first. It was confirmed previously that in GTA IV every street will be named, and this is what cops use to communicate when they are tracking you down. There are no Pay N' Spray's to save you this time, unfortunately.

* Before heading off to the interview, Niko goes to a menswear store called Perseus. After spending $2,000 on a new suit and shoes, his phone alarm sounds and he begins his journey to the GLS offices for his interview. He speaks to the receptionist from outside the building via intercom, before making his way into the building. He enters Goldeberg's office and puts a bullet in his head, which causes his secretary to trigger the alarm. Niko must beat security guards and police in order to get out of the building. Bullets rain down on him, and there's a police chopper waiting outside. It seems as though the more bullets he takes, the more damage he takes, and hence he becomes less able to fight. The damage is visible.
