Is it a lot of work to transfer stuff? I'm sure the guild would like their mountain(s) to come along at least.
And I am sure the rest of the people would like their stuff to come too.

We could do a maximum of 2 buildings a person or so?

The more I have begun playing again, I can tell that we really can't change the map. It will be nearly impossible to transfer people's things. Just walking around the map for a while you will find huge, amazing buildings that you have never seen before. There is just simply too much to transfer that will make every user happy. I think there are map editors that allow you to regenerate some areas with the new seed (when 1.8 comes out).

Re: 1.8 and the map. - Richard - 08-24-2011

You mean put the new parts that 1.8 offers in the current map?

Re: 1.8 and the map. - MacSto - 08-24-2011

Right. I think it only applies to chunks that haven't been generated, or ones that haven't been edited. I'm not sure exactly, but I will do some research on it.

If a player gets close to a new chunk for the first time, Minecraft generates it, trees, plants, ores, caves, dungeons etc. If the player leaves that chunk again (or is too far away from it) it won't be removed, Minecraft saves it on the HDD and everytime someone enters that chunk again, it is loaded from the HDD instead of being newly generated. The livemap we got at mineground.com shows chunks from the HDD. The problem is, 1.8 has a new map generator and possibly a lot of new blocks, this blocks won't be added to our world if no new chunk is generated and this means everyone has to go to a very far land and mine their stuff there, making the world even bigger as the new chunks have to be saved as well.

Why don't we let our players decide? We keep the old world and create a second world, generated with the 1.8 chunk generator, players won't miss their buildings and if there are players up to discover this new world they are free to do so, sadly this increases the HDD space as well, but instead of deleting the whole world we could limit it, as you planned to do, don't ask me how :D.

So eh, what are we going to do then? Update is just 4 days away.

Transfer 1 or 2 buildings a person along with their chests or so?

Re: 1.8 and the map. - MacSto - 09-08-2011

Yup, pretty much. I hope my basement is drained and I get a new modem by then, or else I wont be around. About 6 inches in the entire basement atm :/

Re: 1.8 and the map. - Richard - 09-08-2011

Alright, then I can at least tell people that :P Got several people asking in the last days.
And what about their chests, they come along or?

Yeah I saw on IRC.. good luck!

As far as I know WorldEdit also copies chests and their content. (They won't be locked tho)

etc

I asked jeb if he could tell me the the differences between 1.8's and 1.9's world generators, here's hoping I get a response.
