Has any of the people here considered the reasons for this persons actions? Sure you're all jumping to conclusions and criticising his actions, but how do you know this person was not a bully victim for example, sought to seeking revenge on the people that have done this to him?

And how anyone can even remotely imply that by one committing suicide is "selfish" is beyond me. He was obviously very depressed and seen no other route out.

Actually you can read his suicide note online somewhere, and it explains the situation he was in. Basically he felt that he was an underachiever, a disappointment to his family.

But the reason I said it's selfish is because someone loves him, be that a girlfriend, parents, siblings or a friend. When you kill yourself, you rid yourself of the pain of your life, but you also cause more pain to the people you leave behind.

I couldn't agree more, it's something that's close to my heart (not me personally) and I've never blamed the person for doing it, as weird as it sounds it actually takes a hell of a lot of guts to go through with the act itself knowing the consequences. Suicide is rarely an impulsive act and someone could have been trying for years to find another way out of the situation before coming to the conclusion that life is not worth living anymore.

However in this particular case and those where someone does it in a public space my empathy is very low.

Apparently that note was copied.

And it's selfish for those who love him to ask that he keeps living in pain.

I just read this topic but seriously guys, I think you are a stupid mindless prick if you call comitting suicide ''selfish.'' You obviously don't know what it is like to be depressed. Neither do I, but let's say something happend some years ago what makes me think like this.

If suicide is selfish because it causes upset for those around the victim, is it not selfish for those around the victim to want him to stay alive (and continue suffering in the process)?

It's easy to say there's always a way out but if you're in a position where you see no alternative then I don't find it selfish for them to want to end their own suffering. And as dappamikey said it would take some courage to go through with the act, knowing of the consequences. And I'm sure it would take some planning too, which I would think during the planning they've had time to think of the alternatives.

In my opinion, someone that wants to end their life is not mentally stable, and needs some counselling.

It might not always be because they're mentally unstable. It could be the person is in extreme pain that isn't ending (due to no cure or whatever) and wants to end it themselves. I don't see how counselling will help that.
